BIGOT, Georges-Ferdinand - Lot 177
BIGOT, Georges-Ferdinand Tôbaé, satirical newspaper. Set of 14 issues N°1 to 17. Yokohama, February 15, 1887 - October 15, 1887. 14 vol. in-folio. In sheets, under illustrated covers. N°1 : [11]ff. N°2 : [7]ff. N°3 : [8]ff. N°4 : [8]ff. N°5 : [8]ff. N°7 : [8]ff. N°8 : [8]ff, N°9 : [8]ff, n°10 : [6]ff, N°11 : [8]ff, n°12 : [8]ff, N°15 : 8]ff, n°16 : [8]ff, N°17 : [8]ff. Extremely rare head of collection appearing at the rate of two issues per month. Some engravings of the first 4 issues are slightly enhanced with red pencil. Some handwritten notes in graphite in the margins of the engravings or on the back. Without the numbers 6 - 13 - 14. The n°1 and 10 are not sewn. Double-page engraving in No. 1, 3, 4, 5, 9 and 17. No. 2 should be missing one sheet and No. 10 two. But the number 1 not being sewn and the sheets arranged in the disorder, perhaps that 3 sheets come finally to supplement the numbers 2 and 10. The account would be good. Rare satirical newspaper, published from 1887 to 1889, founded by Georges Bigot. Published in Yokohama, then an offshore zone. It freely expresses its political commitment as well as its support for the Japanese democratic movement, active at the turn of the century. He also expresses his anticlericalism and his contempt towards the modernization accelerated by the Japanese government. The NL owns only a part of it. Worm work in the margin of n°4, slightly affecting the engravings, in n°5.
