Handwritten letter from Emir Abdelkader ibn Muhieddine (1808-1883) Beneath a line portrait of Countess Marie Anne Walewska (1823-1912) is a text in cursive calligraphy and Arabic in the hand of Emir Abd el-Kader. Below it is the seal of the Algerian religious and military leader, with the date 1272 AH (1855 AD). On the opposite side is a finely calligraphed page translating Abd el-Kader's text into French, signed by Baron Roumeaux (?). The verses quoted by Abdelkader are attributed to the poet Al-Qadi Al-Fadil, jurist and official under the Fatimids of Egypt. This letter is calligraphed on a page from the album of Countess Marie Anne Walewska (1823-1912). She married Alexandre Colonna Walewski, a Franco-Polish military officer and diplomat, natural son of Napoleon I and Marie Walewska, who served as a minister and senator under Napoleon III.
