VADIANO, Joachim Pomponii melae de orbis situ libri tres (...) Basel, Andreas Cratander, 1522. 2 parts in 1 vol. Full contemporary calf, cold decoration on the boards, spine ribbed. 220 pp, [1] f, [41] ff, [1] f blank. Title page with a large historiated framing decoration engraved on wood signed H F, initials. Book containing THE FAMOUS MAP OF THE WORLD BY PETER APIAN, Tipus Orbis Universalis iuxta Ptolomei Cosmographi ... MDXX, which is considered the first map where the name America appears. Folding map, short in both vertical margins. The practice of inserting world maps into geographical texts flourished in the early 16th century. This map was found in some of the Basel editions of Pomponius Mela and in the 1520 Vienna editions of Solinus' Geography. Some handwritten notes in the margins. Manuscript bookplate Caroli furnii & amicorum, on the first blank leaf, repeated on the title page: Carolus Furnius. Restorations in the upper corner of the first few leaves, on page 165. Spidering and beginning of splits at the spines. Restorations in the margins of the boards.
