Corinthian marble CHAPEL carved with a drill bit on all side - Lot 249
Corinthian marble CHAPEL carved with a drill bit on all sides, with serrated acanthus leaves on two registers and a row of pearls. Andalusia, Umayyad art probably 10th century H. 31.5 - W. 31 - D. 31 cm (worn, broken, reattached) Provenance: Heirs of D. Mariano Contreras Granja. Architect and director of the Alhambra of Granada -Spain-. (1826-1890) The white marble of this capital has many calcite crystals and comes from a quarry in the Spanish Pyrenees. Although it has been cleaned, there are still traces of pollution and earth in the small cavities of the decoration; one can also see underneath traces of hammering that allowed the sealing with mortar and the accidents at the edge may have been caused by its loosening. 110/
