Butterfield" pocket sundial in silver with octagonal plate engraved with time scales (Roman and Arabic interspersed) for latitudes 40°, 45°, 50° and 55°, with folding gnomon and bird style, embedded compass decorated with fleur de lys. Engraved on the back of the latitudes of major European cities. Signed "N. BION in Paris" 7.3 x 6.5 cm. In its black grief case, lined with green velvet. Gross weight: 37.5 g Nicolas BION (1652-1733) French engineer and cosmographer, he was the engineer of LOUIS XIV for mathematical instruments. In 1681, he opened a workshop under the name "Quart de cercle", quai de l'Horloge in Paris. One of his sons, Jean-Baptiste- Nicolas, also became the King's engineer and took over his father's workshop in 1731
