China, late Jiaqing period (1796-1830) A pair of finely carved cinnabar lacquer dishes featuring a Taoist legend, one telling the story of an aging dignitary who, in the twilight of his life, begins to renounce his duties and lead a quiet, humble life. Every day, in an act of respect and devotion, a servant or relative washes his feet at the end of the day. The second dish illustrates "tea time", symbolizing the simplicity and purity of the Taoist spirit. The reverse of each dish decorated with lotus flowers. In Taoist philosophy, this legend illustrates the importance of abandoning material concerns and social status, in favor of a peaceful life aligned with nature.
