Christian VAN ADRICHOM (1533-1585) - Lot 94
Christian VAN ADRICHOM (1533-1585) (JERUSALEM) IERUSALEM and Suburbia Eius Geographical map printed in black 1584, pasted on modern cardboard, important trace of wetness on the right side, numerous rubs, as is. 51.2 x 74 cm (view) "Christiaan Van Adrichom, a Catholic priest working in Cologne, in present-day Germany, had probably never visited Jerusalem before creating this map in 1584. At the time, the Holy Land had been Muslim for centuries, so it was difficult and potentially dangerous to travel there as a Christian pilgrim. Nevertheless, Van Adrichom succeeded in creating a very popular map that not only enabled European Christians to imagine a journey they would certainly never undertake, but also took them back in time by depicting the city as it was at the time of Christ".
