Notes on the War of 1870 In French, manuscript on paper France, Burgundy (Nuits-Saint-Georges, Dijon are cited), November 7, 1870 to March 28, 1871 29 ff. written from the center of a stapled notebook (remaining blank leaves) + 8 large strips of paper with inscriptions, unbound. After the defeat at Sedan on September 2, 1870, the Prussian armies rapidly occupied all of eastern France. Giuseppe Garibaldi, hero of Italy's wars of unification and an ardent republican, was at the service of the French Republic. Gambetta commissioned Garibaldi to organize the Vosges army in eastern France: from November 1870 to January 1871, the Vosges army attempted to retake the capital of Burgundy. The Prussian army was halted at Nuits-Saint-Georges: on January 14, 1871, Garibaldi set up his headquarters in Dijon, which had been recaptured from the Prussians.
