After fighting in the 1870 war, Etienne Dujardin-Beaumetz entered the École des Beaux-arts in 1873, where he studied under Alexandre Cabanel.
Two years later, he exhibited for the first time at the Salon de la Société des artistes français under the name Beaumetz. The 1870 war is a recurring theme in his work. The start of his political career in 1888 led him to cease all artistic activity.
From 1905 to 1912, he was Under-Secretary of State for Fine Arts.
