Georges Lacombe was nicknamed by his contemporaries the Nabi - sculptor. He was first a pupil of his mother, who was a draughtsman, and of his father, Jean-Baptiste Lacombe, a man of letters and woodcarver. He attended the workshop of Gervex for some time. In 1892, he became a student of Paul Sérusier, met Gauguin, and joined the Nabi movement. In 1900, following his meeting with Theo van Rysselberghe, he turned to neo-impressionism.
