Beautiful and rare large medal in finely chased and gilded bronze depicting the Duke of Mantua in straight profile; the border is titled: "Fran. III D. G. Dux Mantu Mont. Fer. III An. I. Aet. XXVI". Signed Dupré and dated 1612; reverse signed JB Keller and dated 1654. 17th century (slight oxidation). D : 16.2 cm. A medal by Guillaume Dupré dated 1612 belongs to the Château de Pau collection. The example we propose corresponds to the model cast in 1654 by Johann Balthasar Keller (1638-1702); an identical example, formerly in the Gustave Dreyfus and Duveen Brothers collection, is held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington (Samuel H. Kress Collection) and illustrated in George Francis Hill and Graham Pollard, Renaissance Medals from the Samuel H. Kress Collection at the National Gallery of Art, London, 1967, n°561.
