[MILITARIA]. [ITALY]. High ranking officer, full-length port - Lot 91
[MILITARIA]. [ITALY]. High ranking officer, full-length portrait [LAMORICIERE, Christophe-Louis-Léon-Juchault de (?)]. Gouache, pasted on cardboard (some rubbing) Dimensions of the gouache: 375 x 230 mm. On the terminal in the lower left corner one reads: "Se et ante actos triumphos pro Petri sede lubens devovit. Rom VI. Nov. MDCCCLX [1860]". This is a reference to the Castelfidardo medal instituted by Pope Pius IX in 1860 and awarded to the participants of the papal forces in the battle of Castelfidardo. The battle took place at Castelfidardo in the Marche region of eastern Italy near Ancona on September 18, 1860 between about 60,000 Piedmontese under the control of General Cialdini and about 10,000 papal volunteers under the authority of General de Lamoricière who had come from all over Europe and in particular from the ranks of the French aristocracy. The result was a victory for the Piedmontese. In 1860, the Italian unity was carried out with a lightning speed. The Holy See resolved to protect itself against the Piedmontese and entrusted the organization and command of its army to Lamoricière. This army was defeated; Lamoricière, locked up in Ancona, had to surrender in September 1860.
