Gilbert ALBERT (1930-2019) - Lot 179
Gilbert ALBERT (1930-2019) Yellow gold pendant 750 mm showing a plant fall holding a black oval opal. Signed and numbered. N°7221. Height : 5,7 cm. Gross weight: 7.6 g. GILBERT ALBERT (1930-2019). Jeweller, certainly, but also jeweller, fashion designer, sculptor and even painter, the little Gilbert was born with creation in his blood; he took his place at the workbench from the age of fifteen, at the school of industrial arts, to learn jewelry; immediately, at the time, he already drew abundantly, constantly, even so much and more, and presented his detractors with his determined character, which nothing would ever deny later on... As Picabia had said, but also Flaubert before him: "talk behind my back, my ass contemplates you..." In 1943, at the age of 13, he started working at Gallopin, then in 1952, he was hired, pardon the pun, at the age of 22, as a workshop manager at Patek-Philippe where he designed the Cobra, but also, sending round and square shapes back to the closet, shell watches and, above all, asymmetrical watches, before creating, in 1962, his own workshop in order to live in total creative freedom : Gilbert Albert has so much to say about the world of shapes, especially those induced by nature and which he likes to adapt to the arts applied to industry, that he cannot depend on an industrial group, even if it is one of the most prestigious in the world. He wants his ideas, inspired by long hours of observation in forests or gardens, to be staged and presented as he sees fit: fossils, skeletons, meteorites, wood species, sea urchins and even beetles, bones, everything is good for expressing his thirst to create from things of life and the world... And the success is there: he wins 10 times (!!!) the Diamonds International Awards contest and repeats over and over that "to create is to respect one's name and not to be fashionable, it is to sign and date what has been realized." Finally, he created the Musée des Cabinotiers, a tribute to his moving past among craftsmen, watchmakers, diamond cutters, lapidaries, enamellers, chasers, chain makers, case makers, engravers, in short, all the golden hands with a thousand talents to which Geneva owes its prestigious reputation. We present here a few pieces from a single address.
