GODEFROY, Jacques. Codex Theodosianus cum Perpetuis Commentariis Iacobi Gothofredi. Leipzig, Maur. Georgii Weidmanni, 1736 - 1745. 6 volumes in 7 folio volumes. Full ivory vellum, painted title-piece decorated with gilt fillets with rat's teeth in frames, library label at the end of the spine. Some beautiful engravings in-text. Second edition of this monumental legal and scholarly achievement. This work is the compilation of all the laws of the Roman Empire since the year 312 (the reign of Constantine), commissioned by emperor Theodosius II (emperor of the East) and co-emperor Valentinian III (emperor of the West), first published in 438. This edition, commented by Godefroy, is the first modern edition of the Codex. The Theodosian Code became the most authoritative form of Roman law in Western Europe; it was in force throughout the Middle Ages. Very nice set in full contemporary vellum. Volume VI in two volumes. Stamp of the Mecklenb Library. Ritter U. Landschaft.
