Iznik pitcher decorated with mandorles and floral bouquets - Lot 289
Iznik pitcher decorated with mandorles and floral bouquets Siliceous paste with polychrome decoration in blue, green, black and coral painted under transparent colorless glaze Turkey, Iznik, 1565-1575, Ottoman Empire H. 25 cm (some hair, chips and wear). Beautiful Iznik pitcher with a pear-shaped body, a flared neck and a handle, decorated on the body and neck with poly-lobed mandorla on a background of bunches of coral roses, separated by registers of friezes of Greek, chevrons and wavelets. It is rare to find the "small bouquets" decoration on shaped pieces, and even more so as here associated with the poly-lobed mandorla decoration. For examples of dishes with small bouquets, see : Hitzel, F. and Jacotin, M. (2005) Iznik - L'Aventure d'une collection - Les céramiques ottomanes du musée national de la Renaissance Château d'Ecouen, Paris: RMN, pp. 147-155.
