Upside-down beechwood armchair, carved, gilded and grey rech - Lot 306
Upside-down beechwood armchair, carved, gilded and grey rechambered; the armrests with scrolls and foliage with rosettes; front legs in quivers and gadrooned rings; rear legs sabres also with gadrooned rings. Stamped by BRION and MAIGRET. Beginning of the Restoration period (restorations of use and wear to the decoration). Brown fabric upholstery with stylized flowers. H : 98 - W : 63 - D : 65 cm Originally, this rare armchair, bearing the double stamp of Brion and Maigret, was part of a larger set of salon furniture which would have come from the collections of the Sultan of Turkey; by tradition, this set of seats would have been by the Emperor Napoleon and would have come from the sale which followed the deposition of the Sultan (see D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le mobilier français du XIXe siècle, dictionnaire des ébénistes et menuisiers, Les éditions de l'Amateur, Paris, 2000, p.101).
