WETSTENII, Joh. Rodolfi - Lot 278
WETSTENII, Joh. Rodolfi Pro Græca & genuina linguæ græcæ pronunciatone contra novam atque à viris doctis passim propugnatam pronunciandi rationem. Orationes apologeticæ. Quibus succendunt aliæ quædam diversi argumenti. Amsterdam, Henricum Wetstenium, 1681. 1 vol. in-8. Full contemporary glazed calf, gilt arms in the centre of the boards, spine gilt, gilt title. > Copy of Pierre-Daniel Huet, with his arms and his armorial bookplate pasted on the back cover. Handwritten bookplates: Chardon de la Rochette. Cte Alphonse de la Guère. Domus profess. Pari[siensis] (?) societatis Jesu [Professed house of the Jesuits (Paris) ?] Label pasted at the bottom of the title page: "Ne extra hanc Bibliothecam efferatur. Ex obetieutâ." According to the Olivier, Huet founded the Academy of Sciences in 1662, appointed bishop in 1685, he administered his diocese without being consecrated until 1689. Huet had one of the finest libraries of his time. After having hesitated for a long time about its future destination, he bequeathed it, in 1692, to the Jesuits' professed house in Paris (IVth), now occupied by the Lycée Charlemagne, under certain conditions. It was installed, during his lifetime, in a reserved part of this house, where he retired himself and lived until 1721. Most of these books are remarkable for the beauty of the copies, and precious for the learned notes that Huet had added to them in his own hand. Blunted lower corners. Slight foxing to some leaves. O.H.R. pl.1684, n°2.
