[ASTROLOGIE - PTOLÉMÉE]. BOURDIN, Nicolas. L'Uranie de Messire Nicolas Bourdin, Chevallier, Seigneur de Villennes : Ou la traduction des Quatre Livres des Jugemens des Astres de Claude Ptolémée, Prince des Sciences Célestes. Paris, Cardin Besongne, 1640. 1 vol. small in-12. Contemporary basane, cold-stamped arms on the boards (with traces of old gilding), double gilt fillet in the border, spine with ornamented nerves, gilt title. 22] ff. 432 pp. Engraved title vignette. First edition of the only French translation of Ptolemy's "Tetrabible", a reference work on ancient judicial astrology. "Rare and most esteemed work on astrology: it is the only French translation of the Four Books of Ptolemy" (Caillet). The book bears the arms of Bourdin de Villennes (Berry), with his motto: "Regibus illa manent gratæ virtutis avorum". Son of Jacques II, councillor-notary and adviser to the king under Henri IV, he died in 1676, after having published some poetry and some works of astrology. Caillet, 1548. O.H.R. pl. 1202. Title page short of margins with angular lack, marginal wetness, and small lack to last leaf. Work partly unbound, with accidents to the binding. Modest condition.
