SAMBUCUS, Johannes. - Lot 132
SAMBUCUS, Johannes. Emblemata, et Aliquot nummi antiqui operis. Quarta editio. Antverpiae, Christopher Plantin, 1584. 1 vol. in-16. 19th century full blond calf, gilt coat of arms in the centre of the boards, triple gilt fillet in the border, ornate ribbed spine, black morocco title and date pieces, gilt edges. 352pp. There are at least five editions of these Emblems all printed by Plantin, the last ones are the most sought after: in the copies that we find are usually gathered the Emblems of Hadr. Junius or the Young. This is the fourth edition of Plantin's first book of emblems. It contains the printer's mark on the title page, the author's portrait, 216 emblems and 90 engraved medals. Page 121 contains one of the first representations of the game of paume. Bound with the arms of Henri Spitalieri (1810 - 1875), Count de Cessole. A well-informed bibliophile, he increased the collection started by his father and by his great-grandfather, the Marquis de Ripart de Monclar. Brunet, V, 104. O.H.R. pl. 2202. Restoration to the upper corner of page 23, with damage to the pagination. Slight rubbing to corners and headpieces.
