HENRI III (1551-1589) Roi de France. - Lot 31
HENRI III (1551-1589) Roi de France. L.S., Paris 23 October 1582, to his "amez et feaulx" of the country of Languedoc ; countersigned by Nicolas de NEUFVILLE ; 2 pages in-fol. On the wars of religion. He rejoices in their diligence "in the pursuit of those who dared to raise, and assemble people of war, in our country of Languedoc, against our deffensses and without our permission". But, on the remonstrances of the sieur de CHASTILLON (François de Coligny) and of the lords of the canton of BERNE, "our allies and good friends", he orders "that no pursuit will be made nor research of the levies that led. Sr. de Chastillon has made pardela to go to their aid and assistance", and that his captains and soldiers be "in no way worried and molested", having remitted and forgiven this disobedience. But he did not want "the excez and violence perpetrated on our poor people" to go unpunished, and the perpetrators must be punished as an example, without "allowing that under the pretext of his investigations, animosity be used and any vengeance exercised", so that "Justice be done to the evil ones, and that the good ones be maintained in peace and seurity, under the protection and safeguard of our laws"...
