Bronze, chased and gilded plaque representing the Virgin of - Lot 288
Bronze, chased and gilded plaque representing the Virgin of Loreto. In the background, the basilica built to preserve the Santa Casa, house of the Virgin. Italy, workshop of Andrea Sansovino or Aurelio Lombardi, second quarter of the 16th century H. 12.2 - 10.5 cm The Musée d'Ecouen holds a plate of this type (inv E Cl 20019). The attribution to the workshops of Andrea Sansovino or Aurelio Lombardi is uncertain. However, this model of plate was widely distributed, as pilgrimage to the house of the Virgin in Loretto in Italy was very popular in the 16th century. Moreover, it was widely used by sculptors, who could see the outline of the Basilica of Loretto in it and drew much inspiration from it, especially for numerous bas-reliefs with a Marian theme.
