LARGE PROCESSION CROSS in cast silver, chased and engraved, - Lot 266
LARGE PROCESSION CROSS in cast silver, chased and engraved, decorated with appliqué figures. Arms with flowered end, square intersection, small fleurons all around. On the front side: Christ is surrounded by the Virgin and Saint John sitting on the eagle, his symbol. He is surmounted by the pelican giving its blood to its young, an image of its sacrifice. Below Christ, the Paschal Lamb is lying on the book with the seven seals. On the other side: the Virgin and Child is surrounded, on her right, by St. Matthew surmounting the angel, her emblem, above, by St. Mary Magdalene, below St. Mark, recognizable by his lion. The missing figure to the left of the Virgin was probably that of St. Luke. Important architectural knot with openwork railing surmounted by elaborate buttresses alternating with six pinnacle-shaped canopies housing applied figures of saints, including St. Lawrence with his grill, St. Barthelemy carrying his martyr's knife, and probably St. Peter. Marks in Gothic letter CERV on four halos. Spain, Catalonia, Cervera, 16th century H. 103.6 - L 40.4 cm (small missing parts)
