Ink and wash on paper Dimensions : 240 x 174 mm At the age of 84, in 1778, Voltaire made a triumphant return to Paris where, feted by the Academy, he attended the performance of his last tragedy, Irène, acclaimed by the crowd. Overwhelmed with honours, he died on 30 May 1778 in the house on the quay that bears his name. Three years later, his ashes were transferred to the Pantheon.
