BELL D'ANTERMONY, JEAN. TRAVELS FROM ST. PETERSBURG IN RUSSIA, IN VARIOUS PARTS OF ASIA. Paris, Robin, 1766. 3 vols. in-12. Contemporary full marbled calf, spine gilt, green morocco title-pieces and red morocco gilt head-pieces. First edition of the French translation, illustrated with a folding map of the route between Moscow and Peking. The Scottish ambassador and physician John Bell of Antermony (1691 1780) travelled from 1715 to 1738 on behalf of Peter I of Russia. His diplomatic travels took him to Peking, Isfahan, and Derbent in Persia and Constantinople. Followed by: Journal of the residence of M. Lange, Agent of his imperial majesty of all the Russias, Peter I, at the court of Peking, in 1721 & 1722 containing his negotiations, in continuous pagination.
