École Française du XIXe siècle - Lot 53
École Française du XIXe siècle The storming of the Bastille Panel Bears a signature at the bottom left 20.5 x 26.5 cm This painting representing the storming of the Bastille takes the same viewpoint as the print drawn by Charles Monnet and engraved by Isidore-Stanislas Helman and Antoine-Jean Duclos in 1795-1796. On July 14, 1789 the Bastille prison was attacked. Following the demonstrations of July 11, the rioters, who were short of weapons, gunpowder and bullets, headed for the Bastille. Several delegations were sent to De Launay, the governor of the State Prison, but he refused to give his ammunition reserves. Shooting broke out, followed by an assault, shown here, which led to the capture of this fortress, which was considered impregnable, and its destruction on 15 July.
