* [PHOTOGRAPHY] [CHINA]. [DIPHOMACY]. Four photographs relating to the French legation received at the imperial audience in November 1894. China, November 1894 Prints on albumen paper (one damaged; folds); two smaller prints (very descended photos) Size of photographs: 204 x 145 mm. Pencil captions on back. Photographs taken during the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895). Auguste Gérard was French ambassador to China from 1893 to 1897. Two photographs show a "car built in France, offered to the Dowager Empress on the occasion of her 60th birthday (yellow colour, gilded copper ornaments)". One photograph shows the "Cour d'honneur of the French legation as the staff go to the courtroom in chairs". The members of the legation identified in the photographs are : Captain of Fleurac, military attaché; Mr. Leduc, 2nd interpreter; H.E. Gérard, Minister of France; Mr. Vissière, 1st interpreter; Dr. Dépasse, legation doctor.
