[EURE]. GAILLON. Drawing showing a 16th century stall of the - Lot 306
[EURE]. GAILLON. Drawing showing a 16th century stall of the Château de Gaillon (elevation and cuts) Ink, wash and watercolor on paper (some tears; paper accidents) France, circa 1900 (?) Dimensions: 760 x 1088 mm One reads: "The stalls of the chapel of the Château de Gaillon are currently deposited in the basilica of St-Denis". The stalls of Gaillon were actually installed in the abbey church of Saint-Denis by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century. Originally intended for the chapel of the Archbishop of Rouen, Cardinal Georges d'Amboise, and probably due to an Italian artist, they feature, in the coloured marquetry panels above the seats, the Virtues and the Sybils, and, in the high backrests, episodes from the life of Christ and the Virgin and the martyrdom of St John the Baptist.
