[EURE-ET-LOIR]. [CLEARS THROAT]. Inscriptions on the embroid - Lot 264
[EURE-ET-LOIR]. [CLEARS THROAT]. Inscriptions on the embroidered figured curtains from the Château d'Esclimont that my aunt Duchess Mathieu de Montmorency gave me. Six (6) prints on albumen salted paper, reproducing the curtains decorating the Château d'Esclimont dating from the 17th century, to be reassembled (some a little horny, some tears). Dimensions of each print : 288 x 360 mm. Enclosure: Transcriptions of inscriptions; LAS de Ferdinand Denis addressed to the Duke of Luynes relating to embroidery, dated Paris, 27 August 1862 [Jean-Ferdinand Denis (1798-1890) is a French traveller and historian specializing in the history of Brazil in the nineteenth century. He was administrator of the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève]. Another mention of the hand of the Duke of Luynes states: "The embroideries and inscriptions are related to the discoveries and conquests of the Portuguese in India". A note in the inventory file attributes these photographs to Louis Bisson. The Château d'Esclimont is located 25 km from Chartres and 20 km from Rambouillet. Etienne de Poncher, as prelate, bishop of Paris, rebuilt the Château d'Esclimont in the Italian style. The castle passed to Philippe Hurault, Chancellor of France, then to the Bullion family. The Château was sold to the Montmorency family and then to the de Rochefoucauld family.
