[TURKEY]. [XANTHOS (LYCIA)]. [SCHARF (GEORGE) (1820-1895)]. - Lot 261
[TURKEY]. [XANTHOS (LYCIA)]. [SCHARF (GEORGE) (1820-1895)]. Set of sketches showing the tombs and sarcophagi of Payava, governor of Xanthos (360 BC). Pencil drawings with watercolour highlights, on heavy cardboard paper, cardboard dimensions: 258 x 350 mm England, signed and dated 1851. In 1840, Charles Fellows hired George Scharf to join him on his second trip to Asia Minor and, along the way, spent some time in Italy. Three years later he travelled again to Asia Minor as a draughtsman. He made drawings of views and antiques of Lycia, Carie and Lydie, which are now in the British Museum. A selection of these illustrations with a text by Fellows was published in 1847. After his return to England, Scharf exhibited his paintings of the tombs of Myra and Xanthos at the Royal Academy in 1845 and 1846. Scharf depicts various facets of the sarcophagus built for Payava, a fine example of a so-called "pillar tomb". This tomb, excavated by Charles Fellows and George Scharf, has been in the British Museum since 1848.
