[ARCHAEOLOGY] [CERAMICS]. DRAWINGS OF SO-CALLED "GUTTA" VASE - Lot 244
[ARCHAEOLOGY] [CERAMICS]. DRAWINGS OF SO-CALLED "GUTTA" VASES FROM THE DUKE OF LUYNES' COLLECTION. 4 pencil drawings on paper. One designates under the name of "Guttus" (plural "Gutta", from the Latin "drop") a family of small vases of the Greek ceramic art. They are small, flat vessels with a very characteristic shape and a long, narrow spout. They generally come from the Greek colonies in southern Italy where they were produced in great numbers in the 5th and 6th centuries BC. In the centre, medallions show scenes in relief. These vases were used to pour a liquid in small quantities, "drip by drip". Among the donation made by the Duke of Luynes to the Medal Cabinet are numerous vases and ceramics. PAPERS OF EDUCATION OF HONORED THEODORIC PAUL JOSEPH DUC D'ALBERT DE LUYNES (PARIS, 1802 ROME, 1867) (lot 244 to 279) Heir of an old family of the great French nobility, Honoré duc d'Albert de Luynes was a historian, archaeologist and numismatist, one of the pioneers of Palestinian prehistory. He was also a great patron of the arts. In 1825 he was appointed Deputy Director of Greek and Egyptian Antiquities at the Charles X Museum in the Louvre. He resigned and left for Italy where he rubbed shoulders with scholars and antique dealers. He came into contact with many diplomats and philologists, and became involved in a project for an international research centre on Antiquity (the Institute of Archaeological Correspondence founded in 1829), whose publications he financed. A member of the General Council of Seine-et-Oise since 1836, the Duke of Luynes pursued a parallel political career and was elected to the National Constituent Assembly after 1848. He resigned from office after the coup d'état of 2 December 1851. His main activity was that of a scientist and, above all, a historian and archaeologist esteemed by his contemporaries. The papers presented in this sale often shed light on pieces preserved in museums through donations and acquisitions
