Raoul Varin (18651943) was a French engraver who exhibited at the Salon des artistes français where he received an honourable mention in 1892. He engraved a variety of signed numbered limited edition prints, mainly views of New York and Chicago, in the 1920s and 1930s, published by A. Ackermann & Son, a British publisher with offices in Paris, Chicago and New York. His views took a historical perspective, generally showing 19th century cities, often based on existing classical works. Some of Varin's Chicago prints were historical views based on nineteenth-century illustrations that had been published in France by Jevne and Almini. A large collection of his Chicago views is in the collection of the Chicago Historical Society. In 1930, Varin produced a pair of views of New York from the North River 1839 and New York from the East River 1843 (sold here), based on original prints by Robert Havell (1793-1878).
