[BAFFIER (Jean)]. Correspondence of Jean Baffier (1851-1920), sculptor addressed to Angelo Mariani (1838-1914) and some letters to his son Jacques Mariani Set of 95 letters or letter-cards (LAS) and 12 autograph written cards ("La Gaule Franche. Country of Berry. La Mariette" or "La Gaule Franche. Nivernais Berry. La soupe grasse". Letters dated from April 8, 1892 to December 17, 1913. Jean Baffier was a sculptor and a fervent regionalist from Berry and Nivernais. He founded in Paris in 1888 the "Société des Gâs du Berry et aultres lieux du Centre" located at 6, rue Lebouis (75014) and was known for his anti-Dreyfus and anti-republican positions. He is buried in Sancoins (Cher) where a small museum is dedicated to him. The Archives départementales du Cher have a collection of Jean Baffier's correspondence (23 J). This correspondence shows the relationship between Jean Baffier and his patron Angelo Mariani, a famous pharmacist, bibliophile and philanthropist of Corsican origin. In 1873, Angelo Mariani bought his pharmacy on Boulevard Haussmann, moved to 11 rue Scribe and acquired land in Neuilly-sur-Seine where he set up his factory, laboratories, cellars and greenhouses. In 1880, he built the "Villa Andréa" in Saint-Raphaël. Fascinated by the studies of Paolo Mantegazza on the effects of the plant of coca and those of Albert Niemann which isolates from this plant the crystalline form of the cocaine, Angelo Mariani finalizes with the doctor Pierre Fauvel (one of the first doctors to use the cocaine for its anaesthetic properties), a " wine of coca ". Anxious to invent his own specialty, the young man patented the preparation that he named "Mariani tonic wine with Peruvian coca", soon known under the commercial name of "Mariani wine". In 1885, the pharmacist John Pemberton in the United States, is inspired by the Mariani wine and adds kola nuts, creating the French Wine Coca, ancestor of Coca-Cola that we know today without alcohol and without cocaine (since 1906). Jean Baffier makes numerous mentions to the "Mariani wine" and to the virtues of the "coca". He also talks with his patron about his artistic projects but also his financial worries. Mariani provides him artistic orders and financial aid and doses of "Mariani wine".
