The village of Haute Isle was almost entirely troglodytic until the 19th century and has the only church in Île-de-France to be entirely dug into a cliff (and one of the few in the country with only five in France). In the Middle Ages, troglodytic dwellings implanted on the hillside multiplied. It is then the development of the old heart of the village of Haute-Isle essentially made up of troglodytic dwellings known as "boves". Administratively, Haute-Isle, a small seigniory, depended on the duchy of La Roche-Guyon, a neighboring town. In 1602, the lord of Haute-Isle was André Le Marchant.
