CHINE Jade cachet in the form of two entwined dragons (交龙纽) resting on a base, square carved matrix. On the reverse side black traces. Without the inscription. Size: 9.5 cm x 12.5 cm x 12.5 cm (slight chips) In Chinese history, Empress Dowager Cixi (1835-1908) was the supreme ruler of China during the Tongzhi and Guangxu periods, she held power for 47 years. She liked to use large seals to express her authority, with this form of the two entwined dragons probably carved during her reign. Reference: A seal with a similar shape (two entwined dragons 交龙纽) is among the official seals of Empress Dowager CIXI. Recorded in the Palace Museum (故宫博物院) and Metropolitan Museum (accession number: 17.38.1 Period: 19th century Medium: jade)
