Hans KLEISS (1901-1973) - Lot 39
Hans KLEISS (1901-1973) Floor lamp in stained wood with carved geometric motifs embellished with metal cabochons with stylized geometric motifs and resting on a quadrangular stepped base. Signed with a plaque on the base " H Kleiss ". H : 176 cm Hans Kleiss sold his works (objects in iron or wood) at La Bergerie in Vallauris during the 60s and until his death. Austrian, he had left his native country, crossed France, then Spain, and settled in North Africa. He lived from his brush (orientalist painter) and, above all, from his caricatures which he sold to his models or which were published in the local press. He practiced marvelously the linocut. He had realized a very beautiful work entitled "On the pavement of Algiers", where were sketched the characters of the current life. He had married Yvonne Herzig, a famous orientalist painter, who died in Mougins in 1968. Kleiss was a colossus, a force of nature who became a blacksmith. He beat and cut iron with a rare power, and made astonishing and decorative objects, in particular "pigtail" candle holders. He had an admiration for Berber art, and had a period as a cabinetmaker, where he made heavy furniture, cupboards, tables, chests, carved with typical geometric decorations.
