Jacques AMYOT (1513-1593) précepteur puis aumônier de Charles IX et Henri III, écrivain, traducteur de Plutarque, évêque d'Auxerre. L.A.S. "Ja Amyot E d'Auxerre", Vaujours "ce samedy bien tard" [circa 1585], to Jules GASSOT, "conseiller du Roy et secrettaire de ses finances" in Paris; ¾ page in-folio, address (engraved portrait attached). Very rare and beautiful letter from Amyot. "Monsr Gassot I send you this lackey expressly to ask you not to take the trouble to come here for this voiage because tomorrow I will be prevented with my workmen from having all kinds of quarrels of mesnage and I will decide to leave on Monday early in the morning to go to Paris for dinner where I hope to see you if you are there [....] I have received very bad news from our poor town of Auxerre where since my departure the plague has taken hold, thank God"... Attached: 3 l.a.s. from Max. Quantin (and one from L. Faucou, 1888-1889) about this letter belonging to the Count de La Guère, published in the Bulletin de la Société des Sciences historiques et naturelles de l'Yonne (2nd semester 1888, enclosed).
