Edgard PILLET (1912-1996) - Lot 212
Edgard PILLET (1912-1996) ABCD, 1974 Mixed technique and feathers Dated 74 and titled on the back. 103 x 76 cm EDGARD PILLET Born in the Gironde in 1912, a pupil of the Fine Arts Schools of Bordeaux and Paris, Edgard Pillet played an important role in French artistic life after the war. Painter, sculptor, architect, engraver, he was interested in all facets of artistic creation, even making a film "Genesis" in 1951, which is still shown today at art fairs. After his figurative beginnings and a stay in Algeria that would leave a lasting impression on him (where he met Albert Camus, among others), Pillet returned to France in 1945 and discovered abstraction, a real revelation for the artist. He was one of the first promoters of geometric abstraction before evolving towards a more lyrical and graphic abstraction, following his meeting with Jason Pollock and contacts with the American art scene between 1955 and 1957 when he left to teach in the United States. The works we present for sale are emblematic of this artist and testify to the intellectual and artistic richness of his production. The crucibles were created by Pillet in the 1960s. He then sought to achieve a balance between matter, colour and form. Timeless and mysterious creations, they play with light between concave and convex surfaces, depth of black. In the early 1970s, he became enthusiastic about feathers, a material he was keen to explore all its possibilities. In 1973, he presented an exhibition "Plumes" at the André Zerbib gallery in Paris. The work presented for sale illustrates his research in the harmony of colours combined with a shimmering material. From the 1980s until his death in 1995, Edgard Pillet returned to his first love, easel painting.
